A former top aide to former senator Robert Torricelli, D-N.J., Merola is founding partner of Winning Strategies Washington, where he co-directs the firm’s health care, education, and transportation policy practices, as well as its appropriations practice. The firm, which has more than 50 clients, took in more than $3 million through the third quarter of 2011. Among his coworkers at the firm have been Alex Delpizzo, Brett Helmov, and Laura Lay. Its client list includes several of New Jersey’s leading companies and educational entities, including Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and the Stevens Institute of Technology, as well as California biotechnology giant Genentech. Merola cites his involvement in securing a Medicare reimbursement fix worth nearly $350 million for more than 40 hospitals.
